GTOP S3W9: 1934 Cardinals vs. 1934 Tigers

A rematch of the 1934 World Series turned into a battle for last place in the final series of Season 3. The Detroit Tigers avenged their World Series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals by winning three of four and sending the Cardinals to the cellar.

Mickey Cochrane batted .375 (6-for-16) and Hank Greenberg hit a pair of homers to give him eight for the season for the Tigers (12-20). Jack Rothrock hit .375 (6-for-16) and drove in four runs for the Cardinals (9-23).

Game #1: Detroit 3, St. Louis 1

The Tigers scored twice in the first inning on a Hank Greenberg RBI single, and later on a passed ball. The Cardinals came back with a run in the top of the second on Virgil Davis’ RBI single. Detroit went back up by two in the third inning on Billy Rogell’s RBI single. Then it was zeroes the rest of the way as the Tigers claimed game 1. Schoolboy Rowe scattered four hits to win his team-best fourth game of the season.

Game #3: Detroit 4, St. Louis 3

Billy Rogell hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to put the Tigers ahead 3-1. The Cardinals would tie it in the fourth inning on Leo Durocher’s sacrifice fly. The deadlock was finally broken in the top of the eighth when the Tigers’ Marv Owen came through with a two-out single. Somehow, C-rated Vic Sorrell outdueled A-rated Dizzy Dean.

Game #4: Detroit 6, St. Louis 5

The Tigers went ahead 3-2 in the top of the third on Hank Greenberg’s two-run homer, but St. Louis tied it in the bottom half of the frame. The Cardinals’ Ripper Collins had a two-run double in the first inning and an RBI double in the third. The Tigers scored the next three runs, including a pair of RBI doubles from Charlie Gehringer. The Tigers led by three going to the bottom of the ninth and though the Cardinals got two back on Jack Rothrock’s two-run single, that would be it.
