GTOP S4W1: Gameday #2

After two games, the league still has three unbeaten teams (the 1953 New York Yankees, the 1959 Chicago White Sox and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates) and three winless teams (the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1954 New York Giants and the 1954 Cleveland Indians). All four contests either had a good comeback win or a near-comeback.

Philadelphia 5, Milwaukee 2

The Braves’ Bob Buhl was phenomenal for eight innings, only giving up one hit at that point, which came in the sixth inning. Milwaukee had a 1-0 lead thanks to Bill Bruton’s triple and Del Crandall’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. But it all fell apart for Buhl in the ninth. After the first out, Richie Ashburn walked and Dick Sisler singled. Del Ennis tied the game with an RBI single, and Willie Jones followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly. After another hit, Andy Seminick launched a three-run homer to cap off the scoring for Philadelphia (1-1). Hank Aaron hit a solo homer for the Braves (1-1) in the bottom of the ninth.

New York Yankees 5, New York Giants 4

Giants starter Ruben Gomez was ejected in the second inning, and that would be costly as the Yankees (2-0) scored five runs in the third inning off a reliever. Billy Martin hit a three-run homer and Yogi Berra and Gil McDougald had RBI singles. That was it for the Yankees, who barely held on. The Giants (0-2) got their first run in the seventh when Don Mueller doubled and later scored on a fielder’s choice. They added two more in the eighth on Al Dark’s RBI double and Mueller’s RBI single. They picked up one more in the ninth on Dark’s RBI single. But that would be it, as though the Giants scored in each of the final three innings, they also left runners in scoring position in each of the three.

Pittsburgh 5, Cleveland 4

The Indians went up 4-0 thanks to two-run homers by Al Rosen in the first inning and Dave Philley in the fourth inning. But the Pirates (2-0) came back to win this one. Roberto Clemente doubled and scored on Don Hoak’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. Bob Skinner hit a solo homer in the seventh. In a three-run eighth, Dick Groat had a two-run single and Skinner followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Pirates ahead. The Indians (0-2) put runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth but hit into a game-ending double play.

Chicago 4, Brooklyn 2

The White Sox (2-0) had no problem getting on base, but could only occasionally come through with a big hit, as they left 14 runners on base. Still, the four runs they could get were enough. Jim Landis had RBI singles in both the first and second innings, and Nellie Fox also had one in the second as Chicago took an early 3-0 lead. Bob Shaw gave up only two hits in the first six innings but the Dodgers (0-2) finally got to him in the seventh as Carl Furillo and Billy Cox drove in runs with singles to make it 3-2. The White Sox tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on Jim McAnany’s sacrifice fly.
