GTOP S4W1: Gameday #3

The 1954 New York Giants won their first game of the season and knocked the 1959 Chicago White Sox from the ranks of the unbeatens with a late comeback and an extra-innings effort. The 1953 New York Yankees and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates continue on with perfect 3-0 records — but they meet in gameday #4. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves won for the second time.

Milwaukee 6, Cleveland 5

The Braves (2-1) built a 6-1 lead, as Johnny Logan hit a two-run homer and pitcher Gene Conley drove in two with a single in the fourth inning, and Wes Covington had a two-run homer in the fifth inning. They almost gave it all away in the eighth, as the Indians (0-3) scored four times, including an RBI triple from pinch-hitter Wally Westlake and a two-run homer by Larry Doby. Milwaukee relievers came in and got the final five outs, though, to seal the win.

New York Giants 2, Chicago 1 (11 inn.)

The White Sox (2-1) got a fourth-inning RBI single from Earl Torgeson and eight great innings of work from Billy Pierce. He couldn’t make it nine, however, as the Giants (1-2) finally got on the board in the top of the ninth. With one out, Willie Mays doubled and he scored on Don Mueller’s single. The game went to extra innings and in the top of the 11th, the Giants’ Hank Thompson hit a solo home run. The White Sox put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the 11th but Hoyt Wilhelm was able to get the final two outs.

Pittsburgh 7, Philadelphia 5

This contest went back and forth. The Phillies (1-2) scored one in the top of the first on Del Ennis’ sacrifice fly. The Pirates’ Dick Stuart and Roberto Clemente hit back-to-back solo homers in the second inning. The Phillies matched that in the third inning, as Dick Sisler and Ennis went deep on consecutive pitchers. The Pirates (3-0) tied it at three on a Philadelphia error in the fifth and went back in front on Bill Mazeroski’s RBI double in the sixth inning. Philadelphia wasn’t done, taking a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a two-run double by Sisler. The Pirates kept scoring, tying the game again in the seventh on Dick Groat’s RBI single. In the eighth, they took the lead for good on Bill Virdon’s two-out, two-run triple.
