The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the 1953 New York Yankees in the battle of the last two unbeaten teams to stand atop the league at 4-0 at the conclusion of week #1. The 1959 Chicago White Sox won again to become the only other team with a winning record at this point. The 1954 New York Giants won their second in a row (keeping the 1954 Cleveland Indians winless), while the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers won for the first time.
New York Giants 5, Cleveland 2
The Giants’ Don Liddle took a no-hitter into the sixth and a one-hit shutout into the ninth. New York went up 2-0 in the fourth on Willie Mays’ RBI double and Don Mueller’s RBI single. The Giants (2-2) tacked on three more in the sixth on Hank Thompson’s sacrifice fly, another Mays RBI double and an RBI single from Davey Williams. The Indians (0-4) finally got to Liddle in the top of the ninth when Al Rosen hit a two-out, two-run homer, but that would be it.

The Dodgers scored three runs on six hits in the top of the first, featuring RBI singles by Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges and Carl Furillo. Dick Sisler hit a solo homer for the Phillies in the fourth, but a Philadelphia error contributed to the Dodgers’ fourth run in the top of the sixth, making it 4-1. Philadelphia scored twice in the seventh, then tied it in the eighth on Sisler’s RBI single. In the top of the ninth, Duke Snider launched a solo homer off Philadelphia relief ace Jim Konstanty. The Phillies (1-3) put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t bring one home, and the Dodgers (1-3) won for the first time this season.
