GTOP S4W2: Gameday #5

The 1954 New York Giants won their third straight game by hitting four home runs. They handed the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates their first loss of the season as week #2 got underway. The 1953 New York Yankees and the 1959 Chicago White Sox both won in extra innings to join the Pirates at the top of the standings with 4-1 records. Jim McAnany had a walk-off hit for the White Sox. Duke Snider had the day’s best offensive performance, helping the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers to a win with a solo home run and two RBI doubles.

New York Giants 6, Pittsburgh 4

Willie Mays belted a two-run homer in the top of the first, and Hank Thompson did the same in the third inning to help the Giants to a 4-0 lead. The Pirates got on the board in the fifth when Roberto Clemente doubled and scored on a groundout. New York (3-2) got a solo homer from Monte Irvin in the sixth to push the lead back to 5-1. The Pirates (4-1) tightened things up, scoring twice in the seventh, followed by a Dick Stuart solo homer (his league-best third of the season) in the eighth, making it 5-4. The Giants got their fourth home run of the game in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Dusty Rhodes restored the two-run lead, and Hoyt Wilhelm pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

New York Yankees 5, Milwaukee 3 (11 inn.)

The Braves went up 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Del Crandall singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on Red Schoendienst’s double. Milwaukee starter Bob Buhl had retired 15 straight batters, but with one out in the top of the ninth, the Yankees’ Hank Bauer extended the contest with a solo home run. In the top of the 11th, the Yankees (4-1) loaded the bases with no one out. Gene Woodling had a sacrifice fly, and Yogi Berra followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3. The Braves (2-3) got a leadoff single in the bottom of the 11th but after the first out, hit into a game-ending double play.

The Indians (0-5) looked to be on their way to their first win of the season when they went up 4-0 after three innings. Dave Philley had an RBI single and Jim Hegan had an RBI triple in the second, and Bobby Avila had an RBI double and Al Rosen had a sacrifice fly in the third. The White Sox (4-1) got on the board in the sixth on Sherm Lollar’s two-run homer. They tied it in the eighth on Al Smith’s RBI triple and Earl Torgeson’s sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the 11th, Chicago loaded the bases with one out. After the second out, Jim McAnany ended it with a walk-off single.

Four Philadelphia errors helped the Dodgers to three unearned runs in the first six innings. The Dodgers (2-3) scored twice in the third, as Duke Snider had an RBI double and then scored on an error. They added three in the sixth to make it 5-1 on Jim Gilliam’s two-run homer and another RBI double from Snider. Andy Seminick and Mike Goliat hit solo homers for the Phillies (1-4), the latter making it 5-3 in the seventh. Brooklyn tacked on two more in the ninth on a Snider solo homer and an RBI single from Gil Hodges.
