GTOP S4W2: Gameday #6

Dick Donovan’s shutout victory for the 1959 Chicago White Sox gave them sole possession of first place with a 5-1 record (and kept the 1954 Cleveland Indians winless). The 1953 New York Giants beat the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates for the second straight game, putting both squads at 4-2. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves also pitched an unlikely shutout, keeping the 1953 New York Yankees off the scoreboard and out of first place. The 1950 Philadelphia Phillies evened their series with the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers.

New York Giants 5, Pittsburgh 3

The Pirates got off to a good start by scoring runs in each of the first three innings. Roberto Clemente had an RBI single in the first and a solo homer in the third, sandwiching an RBI single by Bill Virdon in the second. Vinegar Bend Mizell had things going for a while, but his no-hit bid ended in the sixth on Ray Katt’s home run. New York then went ahead with a three-run seventh inning, which included RBI singles by Monte Irvin and Katt, and a bases-loaded walk to Whitey Lockman. Don Mueller added an RBI single in the eighth to help the Giants (4-2) to their second straight win over the Pirates (4-2).

The Braves (3-3) tossed a four-hit shutout, though starter Lew Burdette was injured in the second inning. Bob Trowbridge came in and was terrific over the next 7 2/3 innings to keep the Yankees (4-2) off the scoreboard, stranding runners in scoring position four times. Bill Bruton opened the scoring with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Eddie Mathews had an RBI double in the fifth and a solo homer in the eighth.

Philadelphia 6, Brooklyn 3

The Phillies jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Andy Seminick hit his league-best-tying third home run of the season, a solo shot, in the third inning. Philadelphia scored four more in the fourth inning, with RBI singles from Mike Goliat, Curt Simmons and Del Ennis, and an RBI double from Dick Sisler. Brooklyn closed the gap with Roy Campanella’s two-run homer in the seventh, and Jackie Robinson’s RBI double in the eighth, making it 5-3. Pinch-hitter Dick Whitman had an RBI double in the top of the ninth to increase the Phillies’ lead back to three.

Chicago 3, Cleveland 0

Chicago’s C-rated Dick Donovan pitched a six-hit shutout. He stranded Indian (0-6) baserunners on third base twice and second base three times. Much like their previous two meetings, this one was decided late. It was 0-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Early Wynn finally faltered. Luis Aparicio led off with a triple, and he would score on Jim Landis’ single. Al Smith would later provide a two-run double for the White Sox (5-1).
