GTOP S4W2: Gameday #7

The 1954 Cleveland Indians finally won a game, earning their first victory of the season in their seventh contest. It came against the first-place 1959 Chicago White Sox, which knocked the Sox into a tie with the 1953 New York Yankees and the 1954 New York Giants at 5-2. The Giants beat the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates for the third straight game to clinch the series win, and they now have a five-game winning streak.

Pittsburgh’s Dick Stuart and Milwaukee’s Eddie Mathews both hit their league-leading fourth home runs of the season in losing efforts.

New York Giants 3, Pittsburgh 1

The Giants (5-2) built an early 2-0 lead after Hank Thompson’s RBI single in the first inning and Davey Williams’ solo homer in the second. The Pirates (4-3) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning as Dick Stuart homered. That would be all for Pittsburgh as Ruben Gomez pitched a strong eight innings. New York added an insurance run in the fifth when Whitey Lockman singled and scored on Al Dark’s double.

Cleveland 2, Chicago 1

The Indians’ first win came via an impressive pitching performance from Art Houtteman. Cleveland (1-6) had just six hits, but four of them came on four consecutive at-bats in the third inning, and Larry Doby and Al Rosen had RBI singles to make it 2-0. Chicago’s Al Smith had a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 2-1. The White Sox (5-2) stranded runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, including on third base in three of them.

Brooklyn 6, Philadelphia 3

After three scoreless innings, the Dodgers (3-4) got on the board in the fourth on Duke Snider’s RBI single, while Gil Hodges hit a solo homer in the fifth. The Phillies (2-5) got one back in the sixth as Eddie Waitkus and Dick Sisler both doubled. An error led to Brooklyn scoring four unearned runs in the eighth inning, with Duke Snider hitting a three-run homer and Hodges providing an RBI single. The Phillies scored twice in the top of the ninth to make things interesting, but Clem Labine came in with the tying run at the plate and got the final out.
