The 1959 Chicago White Sox posted an impressive comeback win over the 1954 Cleveland Indians to wrap up the second week of play, giving the Sox the series win and sole possession of first place. The 1954 New York Giants couldn’t finish off a sweep against the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates and fell to second place. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves and 1950 Philadelphia Phillies both won to salvage a split in their series. Eight games have played and the season is one-quarter complete.
Milwaukee 5, New York Yankees 2
Mickey Mantle clubbed a two-run homer for the Yankees (5-3) in the bottom of the first inning, but New York wouldn’t score again. However, it took until the eighth inning for the Braves (4-4) to get to Whitey Ford. Eddie Mathews smashed his league-high fifth home run of the season, tying the game at two in the eighth. Then, in the ninth, Del Crandall slugged a three-run homer to put the Braves ahead. The Braves and Yankees split their four-game series.

Chicago 4, Cleveland 3
The Indians (1-7) took a 2-1 lead on Larry Doby’s two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and a 3-2 lead after Jim Hegan’s solo homer in the sixth inning. It stayed 3-2 until the ninth. The Indians were two outs away from evening the series, but the White Sox’s Bubba Phillips doubled, and Jim McEnany tripled to tie the game. After the second out, an error scored McAnany for the go-ahead run. Chicago won the series 3-1, putting the White Sox (6-2) in first place.

Philadelphia 9, Brooklyn 7
The Dodgers were feeling good after Jackie Robinson’s two-run homer in the first inning, but the Phillies put together a seven-run third inning, highlighted by Del Ennis’ three-run home run. Dick Sisler made it 9-2 in the eighth with a two-run homer. The Dodgers made things interesting, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth and then lighting up the Philadelphia bullpen for four runs in the ninth, including a three-run double from Robinson, but relief ace Jim Konstanty came in and got the final out with the tying run at the plate. Robinson had six RBI in the contest, while the Phillies’ Eddie Waitkus had three doubles. The Phillies (3-5) and Dodgers (3-5) split the series.
