The 1953 New York Yankees’ Whitey Ford and the 1954 New York Giants’ Johnny Antonelli both threw shutouts, and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates also won, creating an interesting logjam in the standings after nine games. Those three teams, along with the 1959 Chicago White Sox, are all tied for first place with 6-3 records.
Not far behind are the 1957 Milwaukee Braves, who also won on gameday #9, and are one game back at 5-4.
A note about gameplay: I’ve played approximately 1,000 APBA basic baseball games over the last three years. I’ve grown weary of seeing some of the same results over and over. Starting with this set of games, I’ve begun utilizing a basic-master game hybrid that I may use exclusively moving forward.
New York Yankees 3, Chicago 0
Whitey Ford scattered three hits and walked two while striking out seven in earning the shutout win. Only one White Sox (6-3) runner made it to third base, and two others reached second base. He retired 11 straight hitters at one point in the middle of the contest. The Yankees (6-3) scored a run in the first when Hank Bauer tripled, then scored on a dropped fly ball. Gene Woodling had an RBI triple in the fourth, and Yogi Berra provided a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 3
The Pirates (6-3) went up 2-0 early on Don Hoak’s RBI groundout in the second and Dick Groat’s sacrifice fly in the third. The Phillies tied it in the fourth on Willie Jones’ two-run homer. Pittsburgh went back up by two in the seventh on Bill Virdon’s two-out, two-run single. Philadelphia got one back in the bottom of the seventh when Granny Hamner tripled and scored on Andy Seminick’s sacrifice fly. The Phillies (3-6) got a runner to second base with one out in the ninth but Roy Face got the final two batters for his third save.

New York Giants 2, Cleveland 0
Johnny Antonelli gave up five hits and three walks, but kept the Indians off the scoreboard. Cleveland (1-8) put runners into scoring position in four of the first five innings but couldn’t come through with a key hit. Antonelli retired the game’s final 10 hitters. The Giants (6-3) scored one in the top of the first when Whitey Lockman singled and scored on Willie Mays’ two-out double. In the fourth, Mays walked, went to third on Don Mueller’s single and scored on Monte Irvin’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-0, and that was enough. The Giants only had four hits in the contest.

Milwaukee 8, Brooklyn 2
The Braves (5-4) hit three home runs, including Del Crandall’s three-run shot during a four-run fourth inning that erased a 2-0 deficit. In the fifth, Wes Covington hit a solo homer, and Crandall drove in two more runs with a single, making it 7-2. Crandall would later be ejected from his contest, but his replacement, Del Rice, added to the scoring with a solo homer in the seventh. Gene Conley won his second game of the season with a solid outing against the Dodgers (3-6).
