Philadelphia 5, Pittsburgh 3

Willie Jones hit a two-run homer to give the Phillies (4-6) a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, and Richie Ashburn had a two-run double as part of a three-run fifth inning that made it 5-0. The Pirates (6-4) finally got something going with two runs in the sixth as Dick Groat and Robert Clemente had RBI singles, and Dick Stuart added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but that would be it.

Cleveland 3, New York Giants 2

The Indians (2-8) only had two hits, but they made them count and got strong pitching from Bob Lemon and two relievers. Bobby Avila had an RBI single in the first for one of them. Larry Doby’s single in the third was the other one, and he and Al Smith both scored via a New York error to make it 3-0. Lemon kept the Giants (6-4) at bay until the seventh inning when Monte Irvin and Ray Katt both hit solo homers. Lemon ran into trouble in the eighth, putting the first two runners on, but Bob Feller came in to get the Indians out of the jam, and Don Mossi finished it off for his second save.
