GTOP S4W3: Gameday #11

There were more runs than usual on this gameday, with the winning teams posting nine, eight, eight and seven runs. Each of the four victors scored, or matched, their season high for runs scored.

We’re back to a three-way tie for first place, as the 1959 Chicago White Sox beat the 1953 New York Yankees, while the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates also won.

Three players had four-hit games: Pittsburgh’s Dick Groat, Cleveland’s Al Smith and Brooklyn’s Jackie Robinson.

Chicago 7, New York Yankees 3

It was tied 2-2 after five, but the White Sox scored in each of their final three at-bats. Earl Torgeson and Bubba Phillips had two-out RBI singles in the sixth, Nellie Fox had an RBI single in a two-run seventh, and Jim McAnany had a run-scoring single in the eighth. Bob Shaw gave up just one earned run over seven innings as the White Sox (7-4) ended a two-game losing streak to the Yankees (7-4).

Pittsburgh 8, Philadelphia 4

The Phillies (4-7) led 2-0 early, which included a solo homer from Willie Jones in the second inning. But the Pirates (7-4) had a six-run third inning on just four hits, plus three walks and an an error. Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazeroski both had two-run singles. Don Hoak walked with the bases loaded, and Dick Groat had an RBI single. Later on, Clemente hit a solo homer in the sixth inning. Groat went 4-for-5.

The Indians (3-8) scored in six of their nine at-bats. Al Rosen had a solo homer in the third and Vic Wertz hit a two-run shot in the fifth. Al Smith went 4-for-6 and Bobby Avila and Jim Hegan had three-hit games. Art Houtteman scattered six hits for the win. The first hit of the game for the Giants (6-5) came in the fourth inning on a Willie Mays solo homer.

The Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson went 4-for-5 and had an RBI single in the first, and RBI double in the third and a solo homer in the seventh. Duke Snider hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Preacher Roe pitched a strong eight innings in the win for Brooklyn (5-6). The Braves (5-6) scored their runs on solo homers by Wes Covington and Red Schoendienst.
