The 1953 New York Yankees and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates both won their games to win their series and end the third week of play tied for first place at 8-4. Both teams had strong pitching performances, as the Yankees’ Johnny Sain tossed a shutout and the Pirates’ Vern Law didn’t give up a hit until the seventh inning.
Milwaukee’s Warren Spahn also took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning in the Braves’ victory. The New York Giants avoided a third defeat to the last-place Cleveland Indians with a comeback win.
New York Yankees 4, Chicago 0
The Yankees (8-4) shut out the White Sox (7-5) for the second time and won the series 3-1. This time, it was Johnny Sain with a two-hitter. The Yankees got three runs in the first inning, which included RBI singles from Hank Bauer and Mickey Mantle and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Billy Martin. Bauer led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a Martin single to make it 4-0, and that was it. Bauer went 4-for-5 and had his league-best fifth triple of the season.
