The top four teams in the league didn’t change from the end of week 2 to the end of week 3, but there’s a new order. The 1953 New York Yankees and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates both won three of four games and are now tied for first. The 1959 Chicago White Sox entered week 3 as the leader, but after losing three of four to the Yankees, they’re a game back. The rematch of the 1954 World Series resulted in a split and the Giants are also a game back of the leaders.
It’s shaping up as another pitchers’ league. Teams are averaging 3.7 runs a game, and only two squads are batting .250 or better. Five of the teams have an ERA of 3.10 or better.
But, unlike previous seasons, no starting pitcher is off to a dominant start, as no one is 3-0 after three starts. Five starters are still 2-0. Roberto Clemente (.413) and Jackie Robinson (.405) are doing their best to lift the hitting numbers, but there are only seven starting field players batting .300 or better.
Beginning at the start of week 3, I moved from playing the basic APBA game to a hybrid of the basic and master games.
