The 1954 New York Giants began their series with the 1953 New York Yankees by coming back from a 5-0 deficit to win 6-5. Coupled with a loss by the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates, that elevated the Giants into a first-place tie with the Yankees and Pirates with 8-5 records.
The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers’ Billy Loes pitched his second straight shutout in the win against the Pirates. Eddie Mathews of the 1957 Milwaukee Braves and Duke Snider of the Dodgers both homered in their victories, improving their league-leading totals to six and five, respectively. But, they were outdone on the day by Ray Katt of the Giants, who hit two solo homers against the Yankees.
Cleveland 6, Philadelphia 2
The Indians (4-9) built a 4-1 lead after three innings behind Larry Doby’s RBI single and Vic Wertz’s sacrifice fly in the first inning, and a sacrifice fly from Al Rosen in the third. The Phillies (4-9) got one back on Dick Sisler’s solo homer in the seventh inning. Cleveland put the game away with two more runs in the eighth inning as Wertz had an RBI single and Dave Philley had a sacrifice fly. Mike Garcia pitched eight solid innings for his first win of the season.

Al Smith drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the first to pace the White Sox to a 2-0 lead. That was it for Chicago (7-6), however, as they wouldn’t advance a runner past first base for the rest of the game. Del Crandall had an RBI double in the second inning, and Hank Aaron had a two-run homer in the third inning to put the Braves (7-6) ahead. Eddie Mathews smashed a two-run homer in the seventh to pad the lead. Bob Buhl pitched a strong eight innings for his first win of the season.

New York Giants 6, New York Yankees 5
The Yankees had a huge third inning, scoring five runs on three hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Gil McDougald started the scoring with an RBI single, and Hank Bauer and Yogi Berra both had two-run singles. The Giants (8-5) got on the board on a Ray Katt solo homer in the bottom of the third. In the sixth, Whitey Lockman doubled and scored on a Willie Mays double, who then scored on a Don Mueller single to make it 5-3. In the seventh, Katt led off with his second home run of the game. With one out and the bases loaded, Mays came through with a two-run double to complete the comeback. With two outs in the top of the ninth, the Yankees (8-5) almost made something happen, with a dropped third strike and a hit-by-pitch giving them two baserunners, but Hoyt Wilhelm struck out the final batter for his third save. The comeback victory allowed Johnny Antonelli to become the league’s first pitcher to win three games despite his rough outing.
