Yet again, we’ve got another four-way tie for first place, and the season is now just one game away from the halfway point. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves stayed hot, winning their fourth straight game to improve to 9-6. The 1953 New York Yankees and the 1954 New York Giants are both 9-6 after the Yankees beat the Giants for the first time in their series. The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates missed out on sole possession of first place after losing to the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers for the first time in their series. The 1950 Philadelphia Phillies beat the 1954 Cleveland Indians for the first time in their series, putting the two into a tie for last place.
Philadelphia 4, Cleveland 3
Larry Doby hit a two-run homer for the Indians in the fourth inning to give them a 2-0 lead and a shot at a third straight win. But the Phillies (5-10) came back and scored single runs in each of the next four innings. Dick Sisler had an RBI single in the fifth, Andy Seminick had a solo homer in the sixth (his fourth of the season), Richie Ashburn tripled and scored on Del Ennis’ single in the seventh and a Cleveland error led to the fourth run in the eighth. The Indians (5-10) scored once in the ninth and had runners on first and third with no one out, but Jim Konstanty struck out the final three batters for his fourth save.

The Dodgers (7-8) scored immediately in the bottom of the first when Jim Gilliam led off with a single and Pee Wee Reese tripled. It stayed 1-0 until the fifth, when the Pirates (9-6) tied it on an error. In the bottom of the sixth, the Dodgers went back ahead on an RBI double by Duke Snider and an RBI single from Gil Hodges. Russ Meyer pitched well for his second win.

Wes Covington had another big performance for the Braves (9-6) as they beat the White Sox (7-8) for the third straight game. His RBI single in the sixth inning tied the game, and his two-run homer (his sixth of the season, tying teammate Eddie Mathews for the league lead) in the bottom of the eighth put Milwaukee ahead 3-1. Bubba Phillips hit a solo homer in the ninth for Chicago, but that would be it.

New York Yankees 8, New York Giants 2
Giants (9-6) starter Ruben Gomez only lasted three innings and couldn’t get hardly anyone out. The Yankees (9-6) scored three in the first inning, two on bases-loaded walks. The Yankees loaded the bases again in the second inning, although Gomez got out of that jam. Gomez gave up four hits and three runs in the third inning, including an RBI single from Gil McDougald and a two-run double from Joe Collins. Whitey Ford improved to 3-0 after four starts with another strong performance.
