The season reached its halfway point and the 1957 Milwaukee Braves continued their hot play, extending their winning streak to five and sweeping the four-game series against the 1959 Chicago White Sox. The Braves are now tied for first place at 10-6 with the 1953 New York Yankees, who salvaged a series split against the 1954 New York Giants.
The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers won again, taking three of four from the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates and knocking the Pirates out of first place. The 1954 Cleveland Indians won to take three of four from the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies as the two teams swapped the final two spots in the standings.
Cleveland 8, Philadelphia 6
The Indians (6-10) took a 6-0 lead after two innings, but they ended up needing more. Larry Doby drove in runs in both the first and second innings, and Bobby Avila had a two-run single in the second to help the Indians to the big lead. But, Philadelphia (5-11) made it 6-3 after the top of fourth with the help of Del Ennis’ two-run homer, and trailed just 7-6 after Andy Seminick’s two-run homer in the sixth (his fifth of the season). The Phillies had runners on first and third with one out in the eighth but couldn’t tie it up. Doby had another RBI single for an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Art Houtteman didn’t pitch well but picked up his third win, while Don Mossi earned his third save.

Brooklyn 5, Pittsburgh 3
The Dodgers took a 3-0 lead thanks to Gil Hodges’ two-run double in the fourth inning and Carl Furillo’s RBI single in the sixth. Preacher Roe was cruising, but was replaced in the eighth inning after giving up a single to Bill Mazeroski and an RBI triple to pinch-hitter Hal Smith. The change didn’t pay off, as Bill Virdon hit a two-run homer to tie the game. Still, Hodges saved the day with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to put Brooklyn (8-8) ahead to stay and give them the series win over the Pirates (9-7).

New York Yankees 5, New York Giants 4
The Giants went up 2-0 in the top of the first on Don Mueller’s two-out, two-run single. The Yankees (10-6) came right back and tied in the bottom of the first, with Hank Bauer and Gene Woodling driving in runs. The Yankees scored two more in the third as Woodling had an RBI double and Yogi Berra had an RBI single to make it 4-2. The Giants (9-7) then evened it at four in the fifth inning as Hank Thompson and Willie Mays drove in runs. The Yankees took the lead for good in the seventh when Bauer led off the inning with his sixth triple of the season, and Woodling doubled him home for his third RBI of the day.

Milwaukee 5, Chicago 2
Milwaukee (10-6) scored two in the bottom of the first thanks to a Red Schoendienst double, a Hank Aaron triple and a Wes Covington single. The White Sox (7-9) thought they tied it up in the second inning on Jim McAnany’s two-run double, but one of the baserunners was called out on appeal for missing third base. The Braves went up 3-1 in the bottom of the second when Bill Bruton tripled and scored on a Schoendienst single. Aaron hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, his fourth of the season, to make it 5-1. Chicago’s Al Smith hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth, and the White Sox were able to get the potential tying run to the plate, but Milwaukee closer Don McMahon finished it off for his fifth save. Gene Conley improved to 3-0 with the win.
