GTOP S4W5: Gameday #17

The 1953 New York Yankees and the 1957 Milwaukee Braves remained tied for first place after both teams opened up their week 5 series with victories. Three of the four games on the day were decided by one run, while the Braves’ victory was by a two-run margin. Bob Friend pitched a shutout for the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates, keeping them just one game back in the standings, while the Yankees’ Warren Spahn and the Braves’ Gene Conley became the first four-game winners. The Braves’ Eddie Mathews and Wes Covington both homered to improve their league-leading totals to seven apiece.

New York Yankees 3, Philadelphia 2

The Phillies’ Curt Simmons pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning by striking out three straight hitters. He loaded them up again in the third inning with three straight walks, and this time couldn’t come through as he issued a bases-loaded walk to Gene Woodling. The Phillies tied it up in the fourth, however, on a solo homer by Willie Jones. The Yankees went back ahead in the seventh on Mickey Mantle’s two-run homer. An error and a sacrifice fly by Jones got the Phillies one run back in the eighth inning, but they stranded the potential tying run on second base in the ninth. Whitey Ford improved to 4-0. Simmons struck out 12 in the loss.

Chicago 4, Brooklyn 3

The White Sox struck first in the top of the first on Nellie Fox’s double and Sherm Lollar’s RBI single. The Dodgers tied it in the third on Jim Gilliam’s solo homer. Chicago took the lead back in the fourth when Jim Landis tripled and Al Smith singled him home. Bubba Phillips added a solo homer in the fifth to make it 3-1. Once again, Brooklyn tied it up, as Jackie Robinson had an RBI single in the sixth and pinch-hitter Bobby Morgan had an RBI single in the seventh. Both teams had golden opportunities in the eighth. The White Sox loaded the bases with zero outs, and the Dodgers put runners on second and third with zero outs, but neither side scored. Chicago came through with the winning run in the top of the ninth when Jim McAnany doubled and scored on Luis Aparicio’s single. Chicago’s Turk Lown improved to 3-0 out of the bullpen, and Gerry Staley earned his fourth save.

PIttsburgh 1, Cleveland 0

Pittsburgh’s Bob Friend and Cleveland’s Mike Garcia put on a fantastic pitchers’ duel. It was 0-0 through eight innings. Friend had only given up one hit to that point. Garcia had given up two. It was Garcia that finally faltered in the top of the ninth, as Dick Groat and Bob Skinner had back-to-back doubles for the game’s only run. Friend gave up a second hit in the ninth inning, but got the final two outs to complete the shutout. None of the three Cleveland batters that reached base made it past first base.

Milwaukee 6, New York Giants 4

The Braves added three more home runs to their league-leading total. Johnny Logan and Eddie Mathews had solo homers in the second and sixth innings, respectively. Between them, Hank Aaron had an RBI triple in the fourth. Hank Thompson had a solo homer in the first for the Giants. It was 3-2 Milwaukee going to the eighth inning, and Wes Covington provided a three-run shot to put the Braves up by four. They ended up needing those runs, as in the top of the ninth, Willie Mays picked up his second RBI of the game with a single, and Don Mueller followed with an RBI single to make it 6-4. Don McMahon was able to get the final out for his sixth save. Gene Conley improved to 4-0 after five starts.
