GTOP S4W5: Gameday #18

The offenses came alive on gameday #18, with three of the winning teams scoring 12, 12 and nine runs. Two of the losers had seven and six. The only low-scoring contest came in the 1954 Cleveland Indians’ 4-0 win, which featured a shutout by Bob Lemon.

The 1957 Milwaukee Braves stayed hot, hitting another three home runs and winning their seventh consecutive game — and their second straight over the 1954 New York Giants — to take sole possession of first place. The other three series are all tied 1-1.

Philadelphia 12, New York Yankees 2

The Phillies (6-12) had their biggest offensive explosion of the season and posted a pair of five-run innings. Eddie Waitkus and Richie Ashburn both had four-hit games, and Andy Seminick belted a grand slam in the ninth inning, his sixth homer of the season. The loss evened the series and knocked the Yankees (11-7) out of first place.

Bob Lemon had another excellent performance, tossing a five-hit shutout with two walks, to improve to 3-1 after five starts. Lemon has won three straight starts and given up just three runs in 25 innings of work. The Indians (7-11) got an RBI double from Bobby Avila in the third inning to make it 1-0. They scored three more in the fifth on a two-run triple from Al Smith and an RBI single from Avila. The Pirates (10-8) put runners into scoring position in four different innings but couldn’t get one home.

Milwaukee 9, New York Giants 7

The Braves (12-6) took a 5-1 lead thanks to a three-run homer from Hank Aaron in the third inning and a two-run blast from Wes Covington in the fifth. Covington’s eighth home run of the season leads the league. The Giants (9-9) scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth, tying the contest at five on Ray Katt’s two-run single. Milwaukee came right back with a four-run eighth inning. They put together four consecutive hits off Giant relief ace Hoyt Wilhelm, who had only allowed one hit and zero runs in his first seven appearances. Bill Bruton had an RBI triple, Del Rice followed with a run-scoring single and pinch-hitter Joe Adcock slammed a two-run homer. Willie Mays had a two-run double in the ninth to cut the deficit to two, but Milwaukee closer Don McMahon came in and got the final two outs for his seventh save.
