GTOP S4W5: Gameday #19

The 1957 Milwaukee Braves had their seven-game winning streak come to an end, and it took a shutout from Don Liddle of the 1954 New York Giants to make it happen. Coupled with the 1953 New York Yankees’ victory, the standings are back to a first-place tie with the Braves and Yankees at 12-7. They have a two-game lead over the third-place teams.

All three series stand at 2-1 heading into their final matchup.

New York Yankees 3, Philadelphia 2

The Yankees (12-7) took the lead in the fifth when Billy Martin led off with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on Gil McDougald’s double. McDougald also came through with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning that put the Yankees up 3-0. Philadelphia (6-13) finally got on the board in the seventh when Mike Goliat tripled with two on and two out. The Phillies got the tying run to second base in the ninth inning, but no further. Johnny Sain improved to 3-1.

Brooklyn 4, Chicago 2

The White Sox scored first in the second inning when Al Smith singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice. The Dodgers (10-9) went ahead 2-1 on Roy Campanella’s two-run homer in the fourth inning. They scored two more in the sixth on Duke Snider’s RBI double and Jackie Robinson’s RBI single. Chicago (8-11) got a solo homer from Sherm Lollar in the seventh, but couldn’t get a baserunner past first base the rest of the way. Russ Meyer got the win to improve to 3-2.

Cleveland 9, Pittsburgh 4

Larry Doby hit a two-run home run in the first inning and had an RBI single in the fifth as the Indians led 3-1. Pittsburgh (10-9) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead, which included a sacrifice fly from Bill Mazeroski and a pinch-hit two-run homer by Rocky Nelson. Cleveland (8-11) teed off on Pirate reliever Fred Green in the eighth inning, however, getting five runs on five hits. Five different players drove in runs, including pinch-hitter Wally Westlake on a triple and Al Smith on a double. That put the Indians back in front 8-4. They scored another run in the ninth on Smith’s fourth hit and third double of the contest. The comeback enabled Early Wynn to get his first victory after starting the season 0-4.

New York Giants 3, Milwaukee 0

The Giants (10-9) took a page out of the Braves’ playbook by hitting three home runs. Willie Mays had a solo shot in the fourth inning (his fourth of the season), and Ray Katt hit a pair of solo bombs in the fifth and seventh innings, his fifth and sixth of the season. Don Liddle pitched a four-hit shutout to improve to 3-2. Only two Milwaukee baserunners made it to second base, and the Braves (12-7) never had multiple baserunners in an inning.
