The 1953 New York Yankees won their series with the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies with their third one-run victory of the week, and that was enough to give the Yankees (13-7) a one-game lead in the standings at the conclusion of week #5.
They were aided by the 1954 New York Giants, who won twice at home to even their series with the 1957 Milwaukee Braves, knocking the Braves out of first place.
The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers won their third straight against the 1959 Chicago White Sox to win the series 3-1, while the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates evened up their series with the 1954 Cleveland Indians.
New York Yankees 4, Philadelphia 3
After giving up three runs in the first inning, Yankees starter Eddie Lopat was dominant the rest of the way and had the game-winning RBI. The Phillies (6-14) jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Dick Sisler’s RBI single and Del Ennis’ two-run homer. Phillies starter Bob Miller didn’t give up a hit in the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth, as the Yankees (13-7) scored three times to tie the game on four hits. Gene Woodling and Phil Rizzuto had RBI singles and Billy Martin had a sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Yogi Berra led off with a walk and made it to third base with two outs. Lopat came through with a run-scoring single to make it 4-3. After giving up three hits in the first inning, Lopat only gave up one more the rest of the way, and it came in the third inning.
