GTOP S4W5: Recap

Most of the teams in the league have made a run at first place during the first 20 games. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves became the latest squad to do so partway through week 5. But only one team has been consistently at or near the top, and that’s the 1953 New York Yankees, who have a one-game lead over the Braves and a two-game lead over three other teams at the conclusion of week 5.

The Yankees (13-7) took three of four from the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies, with all three wins coming in one-run games. The Yankees have won five of their last six. The Braves (12-8) won their first two against the 1954 New York Giants to climb into first place, but lost the next two to fall a game back. The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers (11-9) won their second straight series to move into a tie for third place with the Giants and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates.

Wes Covington of the Braves hit three more home runs in week 5, bringing his league-leading total to nine, two better than teammate Eddie Mathews.

Three weeks and 12 games remain in the season. Week 6 is highlighted by a matchup between the Yankees and Pirates, the only series featuring two teams with winning records.
