For the first time all season, a single team has a two-game lead in the standings. That would be the 1953 New York Yankees, who opened their series with a close win over the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates to improve to 14-7. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves were routed by the last-place 1950 Philadelphia Phillies, their third straight loss. They’re now two games back, tied with the 1954 New York Giants, who homered four times to beat the 1959 Chicago White Sox. The fourth game of the day saw the 1954 Cleveland Indians beat the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers 1-0.
New York Giants 6, Chicago 4
The White Sox opened up a 3-0 lead after Bubba Phillips’ two-run homer in the second inning. But the Giants (12-9) hit four home runs to account for all six of their runs. Willie Mays had a solo shot in the second inning, as did Ray Katt in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Monte Irvin and pinch-hitter Dusty Rhodes both hit two-run homers to put the Giants ahead 6-3. It was Katt’s team-high seventh home run of the season, and the fifth for Mays and the fourth for Irvin. The White Sox got one back in the eighth when Nellie Fox led off with a triple and immediately scored on Jim Landis’ sacrifice fly, but Chicago (8-13) wouldn’t get another baserunner and lost for the fourth straight time.

New York Yankees 3, Pittsburgh 2
Neither team had a hit for the first four innings. The Yankees changed that in the top of the fifth as Gene Woodling walked, Yogi Berra doubled and Billy Martin had a two-run single to open the scoring. The Pirates (11-10) cut the deficit to 2-1 on Dick Stuart’s solo home run in the seventh, his sixth of the season. New York got an unearned insurance run in the top of the ninth on Phil Rizzuto’s sacrifice fly. It turned out the Yankees would need it, as the Pirates got one back in the bottom of the ninth as Dick Groat tripled and scored on Stuart’s sacrifice fly. The Pirates had the tying run at first base and the winning run at the plate but couldn’t come through. The Yankees (14-7) won for the sixth time in seven games. Johnny Sain improved to 4-1 and Allie Reynolds got the final two outs for his fourth save.

Mike Garcia and Don Mossi combined on a three-hit shutout and outdueled the Dodgers’ Billy Loes for the 1-0 victory. The Indians (9-12) stranded runners on third base in the third, fifth and sixth innings. The Dodgers (11-10) also left runners in scoring position three times. The only run of the game came in the eighth inning with one out when the Indians’ Vic Wertz launched a solo home run. Cleveland had a chance to add more, putting runners on second and third with one out, but the Dodgers got out of the jam. Garcia pitched seven strong innings and Mossi threw two perfect innings in relief for his fourth save.

Willie Jones had a two-run single in the first inning and a three-run homer in the sixth, his fifth of the season. Andy Seminick had an RBI single in the first, a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and a two-run homer in the eighth, his team-high seventh. Mike Goliat had a solo homer in the sixth. Eddie Mathews drove in both runs for Milwaukee (12-9). Robin Roberts earned his first win of the season in his sixth start.
