GTOP S4W6: Gameday #22

A lot of runs were scored on Gameday #22, as seven of the eight teams scored five runs or more, and the other one had four. The 1953 New York Yankees had the highest output of the day in a 9-5 victory, preserving their two-game lead atop the standings. Two games ended in extra-inning walk-off home runs, provided by Dusty Rhodes of the 1954 New York Giants and Carl Furillo of the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers.

New York Giants 7, Chicago 5 (11 inn.)

The White Sox took a pair of late leads, but each time the Giants evened it up. In the top of the eighth, Sherm Lollar hit a three-run homer to put Chicago ahead 4-2. Willie Mays made it 4-4 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, his sixth of the season. Chicago loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth and Nellie Fox drew an RBI walk. In the bottom of the ninth, Ray Katt reached base via error and scored on Al Dark’s two-out double to send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Davey Williams led off with a single, and one out later, Dusty Rhodes hit a pinch-hit home run for the second straight game, this one for the walk-off victory. The Giants (13-9) have a 2-0 lead in the series and have won four straight, while the White Sox (8-14) have lost five straight.

Philadelphia 8, Milwaukee 4

The Phillies scored three in the first inning with the help of Willie Jones’ two-run homer and three in the third inning on Granny Hamner’s three-run blast, making it 6-1. Jones homered for the second straight game and has six on the season. The Braves made things interesting by scoring three times in the top of seventh, which included Frank Torre’s third double of the contest. But the Phillies put the game away with a bases-loaded walk to Del Ennis in the seventh inning and a solo homer by Mike Goliat in the eighth. Bob Miller picked up his team-high third victory and Bubba Church threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the save. The Phillies (8-14) have a 2-0 lead over the Braves (12-10), who lost their fourth straight game.
