GTOP S4W6: Gameday #23

The 1953 New York Yankees finally lost, but so did the 1954 New York Giants, so the Yankees maintain a two-game lead with nine to play. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves and the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers both won, moving them into a tie for second place with the Giants. The Braves rallied in the ninth and got a walk-off home run by Wes Covington, his league-high 10th of the season. Bob Shaw of the 1959 Chicago White Sox pitched a shutout. All three teams that had 2-0 leads in their series lost here.

Chicago 5, New York Giants 0

Bob Shaw pitched a three-hit shutout to end Chicago’s five-game losing streak and New York’s four-game winning streak. He didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, when the Giants (13-10) got two and loaded the bases with one out. But he got out of the jam and that was the only time New York put runners in scoring position. The White Sox (9-14) quickly took a 3-0 lead on Sherm Lollar’s two-run double and Bubba Phillips’ RBI single in the first inning. They scored two more in the eighth, one on an error and the other on an RBI single by Jim McAnany. Shaw improved to 3-2 on the season.

Pittsburgh 7, New York Yankees 3

The Yankees (15-8) scored first on Gil McDougald’s RBI single in the second inning. But the Pirates (12-11) scored the next seven runs over a six-inning span. Dick Stuart hit a two-run homer in the third inning to get it started, his team-high seventh of the season, and Smoky Burgess had a solo shot in the fourth inning. Burgess also drove in a run via an error in the fifth, Stuart had an RBI single in the seventh and Bill Virdon had an RBI triple and Dick Groat had an RBI single in the eighth. Billy Martin had a two-run double for the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth, but too little, too late. Vinegar Bend Mizell improved to 4-1 on the season.

Milwaukee 3, Philadelphia 1

The Phillies (8-15) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Granny Hamner doubled with two outs and scored on Andy Seminick’s single. It stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the ninth. Philadelphia starter Russ Meyer threw six scoreless innings, and he was then replaced by relief ace Jim Konstanty. He got through the seventh and eighth innings in good shape, but couldn’t close it out in the ninth as the Braves (13-10) finally came alive. Red Schoendienst led off with a triple, and a couple of batters later, he scored the tying run on Hank Aaron’s sacrifice fly. With two outs, Wes Covington slammed a walk-off two-run home run, his league-best 10th of the season.

Brooklyn 4, Cleveland 1

The Dodgers (13-10) got off to a good start by scoring three times in the second inning as Carl Furillo had a two-run double, followed by Billy Cox’s RBI single. They made it 4-0 in the seventh inning when Duke Snider walked with two outs and came home on Jackie Robinson’s RBI triple. The Indians (9-14) left runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. They finally got on the board in the eighth on Al Rosen’s seventh home run of the season, but that was it. Carl Erskine evened his record at 3-3 with a good outing.
