GTOP S4W6: Gameday #24

The 1954 New York Giants and the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers were victorious in their games to win their series 3-1, but so did the 1953 New York Yankees, and that keeps the Yankees with a two-game lead at the conclusion of week 6. The Giants, Dodgers and 1957 Milwaukee Braves are all tied for second place. The Braves got a walk-off win to salvage a split with the last-place 1950 Philadelphia Phillies.

There wasn’t as much offense on this gameday — Luis Aparicio of the 1959 Chicago White Sox had the only three-hit game (in a losing effort) and only three home runs were hit in the four games.

New York Giants 4, Chicago 1

Don Mueller blasted a three-run home run in the fourth inning to get the Giants (14-10) the lead. They added a fourth run in the eighth inning when Ray Katt reached base via an error and later scored on Al Dark’s RBI single. Don Liddle, meanwhile, pitched out of jam after jam. The White Sox put runners in position six times in the first eight innings. Willie Mays threw out a runner trying to score in the third inning. Chicago (9-15) finally broke up the shutout bid with two outs in the ninth. Earl Torgeson had doubled with one out and Jim McAnany’s two-out single gave the White Sox their only run. Liddle improved to 4-2 on the season.

Brooklyn 6, Cleveland 5

The Dodgers (14-10) scored six runs on three two-RBI doubles, which were provided by Billy Cox in the fourth inning, Jackie Robinson in the fifth inning and Duke Snider in the seventh inning. Snider’s hit made it 6-2 in Brooklyn’s favor. The Indians (9-15) scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings but that left them one run short. Jim Hegan had an RBI single in the sixth, Vic Wertz had an RBI double in the seventh, Hegan doubled and scored on an error in the eighth and Al Rosen hit his eighth home run of the season in the ninth.

Milwaukee 3, Philadelphia 2

The Braves (14-10) scored first on Red Schoendienst and Hank Aaron’s doubles in the first inning. The Phillies (8-16) went up 2-1 in the fifth inning on Mike Goliat’s two-run homer. Philadelphia starter Curt Simmons was cruising until the eighth. Schoendienst hit another double, and he scored the tying run on Eddie Mathews’ single. In the bottom of the ninth, Philadelphia RF Del Ennis somehow played a fly ball into a three-base error. Wes Covington scored the game-winning run on Johnny Logan’s suicide squeeze.

New York Yankees 1, Pittsburgh 0

Bob Friend of the Pirates and Eddie Lopat of the Yankees had a terrific pitchers’ duel. The only run of the game came in the third inning when New York’s Gil McDougald doubled, and then scored on Joe Collins’ single. Lopat didn’t allow a Pirate baserunner to make it to second base until the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, Pittsburgh (12-12) put runners on second and third with one out, but Lopat got a popup and groundout to finish the shutout. New York (16-8) won for the fifth time in six games, and the seventh time in nine games.
