New York Yankees 5, Cleveland 4

The Indians (9-16) built a 4-1 lead after six innings but couldn’t hold on. Al Smith had a solo homer in the fifth inning and starting pitcher Bob Lemon briefly helped his cause with a two-run home run in the sixth. The Yankees (17-8) turned things around in the seventh inning, scoring three times to tie the game with the help of a couple of Cleveland errors and a Phil Rizzuto RBI double. Gil McDougald led off the eighth with a go-ahead solo home run for what turned out to be the game-winning run. The Indians put runners on second and third with no one out in the top of the ninth but Allie Reynolds got the final three outs to preserve the win.

Brooklyn 7, New York Giants 3

The Giants (14-11) scored three times in the second inning, with Sal Maglie hitting a two-run single. They wouldn’t score again, despite loading the bases with no one out in the fourth inning, and putting multiple runners on base in the fifth and eighth. The Dodgers (15-10) tied it in the sixth inning on Roy Campanella’s three-run home run. Giant reliever Marv Grissom hadn’t allowed a run in 13 innings of work this season but Jackie Robinson hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, and the Dodgers added three more in the ninth on Jim Gilliam’s RBI single and Pee Wee Reese’s two-run blast. Carl Erskine improved to 4-3 with the win.
