GTOP S4W7: Gameday #27

Johnny Sain pitched a shutout to get the first-place 1953 New York Yankees back in the win column on Gameday #27. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves beat the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates for the third straight game and remain one game back of the Yankees with five to play. The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers couldn’t stay with the Braves, falling to the 1954 New York Giants for the first time in their series behind a big game from Willie Mays.

Chicago 8, Philadelphia 6

A rare offensive explosion by the White Sox (10-17) gave them their first win in the series. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first with Earl Torgeson providing a two-run home run. It was 5-1 heading to the sixth, and then the Phillies (10-17) scored five runs to take a 6-5 lead. Granny Hamner had a two-run single to help the Phillies’ cause. Chicago bounced back, scoring single runs in each of the next three innings. They tied it on Bubba Phillips’ RBI double in the seventh, went ahead on Jim Landis’ RBI single in the eighth, and added an insurance run on Jim McAnany’s RBI single in the ninth. Turk Lown won his fourth game out of the bullpen for the White Sox, and Gerry Staley picked up his fifth save.

New York Yankees 2, Cleveland 0

Johnny Sain pitched a four-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven, to give the Yankees (18-9) their second win of the series. Sain improved to 5-1 on the season. The Indians (10-17) only put runners in scoring position in the eighth inning, getting runners to second and third with one out, but hit into a double play. He was sacrificed to second, then scored on Gil McDougald’s single to make it 2-0.

New York Giants 5, Brooklyn 2

Willie Mays had three doubles to give him a league-leading 16 for the season, and he had a part in four of the five Giant runs. He doubled and scored on Don Mueller’s single in the second. Monte Irvin hit a solo home run in the fourth, his fifth of the season. Mays drove in two runs with his third double in the eighth inning, then scored on another Mueller RBI single. Ruben Gomez took a shutout to the ninth inning but the Dodgers (16-11) finally put two runs on the board. It wasn’t enough as the Giants (15-12) won for the first time in the series.
