The 1953 New York Yankees took a big step toward repeating as champions, as they blasted the 1954 Cleveland Indians, 15-1, to win their series 3-1. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves couldn’t pull off the sweep against the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates, losing the finale of their series thanks to Vinegar Bend Mizell’s shutout. That means the Yankees lead the Braves by two games with four to play.
The 1954 New York Giants routed the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers to even their series. Both teams are still alive, but barely. They’re both three back with four to play. In the final series, the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies shut out the 1959 Chicago White Sox, beating them for the third time to climb out of last place.

The Phillies (11-17) won the series 3-1 as Bob Miller and Jim Konstanty combined on the shutout. Philadelphia’s two runs came on one swing in the second inning, as Andy Seminick hit his eighth home run of the season. Miller pitched out of trouble multiple times, leaving runners in scoring position in the second, sixth and seventh innings. In the ninth, the White Sox (10-18) put two runners on with two out, and Philadelphia turned to the bullpen. Relief ace Konstanty came in and got the final out for his fifth save. Miller improved to 4-2.

Vinegar Bend Mizell tossed his second shutout of the season and improved to 5-1 as the Pirates (13-15) avoided being swept in the series. The Braves (17-11) had runners reach base in every inning but two, and twice got runners to third base, but Mizell got out of every jam. The Pirates got a home run from Bob Skinner in the first inning. In the fifth, Bill Virdon and Dick Groat had back-to-back doubles.

New York Giants 9, Brooklyn 3
The Giants (16-12) had a couple of big innings at the plate and earned a split of the series with the Dodgers (16-12). Hank Thompson hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his fifth of the season. In a five-run fifth inning, Willie Mays had a bases-loaded double that scored all three runners (his league-best 17th double of the season), and Al Dark and Don Mueller had RBI singles. Johnny Antonelli improved to 4-1 with the win. Carl Furillo hit his fifth home run of the season for Brooklyn.

New York Yankees 15, Cleveland 1
The Yankees (19-9) had the highest scoring output by any team this season to win the series 3-1. Joe Collins led the way, as he hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and a grand slam in the ninth, doubling his season output and giving him four. Yogi Berra also had a three-run homer in the fifth. All nine Yankee starters got a hit, and four of them had three hits. If not for pinch-hitter Wally Westlake’s home run in the eighth inning, the Indians (10-18) would have been shut out by Vic Raschi.
