GTOP S4W8: Gameday #29

The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers made a statement in the first contest of their season-ending four-game series with the first-place 1953 New York Giants. The Dodgers handed the Yankees a 10-2 defeat to stay alive, and pull Brooklyn within two games with three to play. The 1957 Milwaukee Braves couldn’t capitalize, as they lost to stay two games back. The 1954 New York Giants were eliminated from championship contention with a loss.

Philadelphia 4, New York Giants 3

In a must-win game, the Giants scored first in the fourth inning when Don Mueller and Monte Irvin both singled, moving up a base on a wild pitch, and then Mueller scoring on a passed ball. The Phillies (12-17) finally broke through in the top of the eighth. Dick Sisler hit a three-run home run, his sixth of the season. Del Ennis followed with a double, and then scored on Willie Jones’ single to make it 4-1. The Giants came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles by Mueller and Irvin. In the bottom of the ninth, the Giants (16-13) got a baserunner to third base with two outs but couldn’t bring him home. Robin Roberts didn’t give up an earned run in seven innings of work for the win. Jim Konstanty recorded his sixth save.

The Braves (17-12) got off to a great start, as Wes Covington clubbed a three-run homer in the top of first, his league-leading 11th of the season. But the Braves wouldn’t score again off Art Houtteman, as he went the entire way and improved to 4-3. The Indians (11-18) quickly came back with a five-run second inning, which featured a two-run double from Al Smith and a two-run homer by Bobby Avila. They tacked on two more runs in the third on back-to-back solo homers by Vic Wertz and Dave Philley.

Brooklyn 10, New York Yankees 2

The Dodgers (17-12) got the rout going early, scoring four times in the first on just two hits, a Jackie Robinson RBI double and a Billy Cox two-run single. Whitey Ford issued four walks in the first inning, including one with the bases loaded to Carl Furillo. The Yankees (19-10) came back with two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Phil Rizzuto and Ford. The Dodgers put the game away thanks to Duke Snider, who hit a three-run homer in sixth inning and a two-run shot in the eighth, giving him eight on the season. Pinch-hitter Bobby Morgan also had a solo homer in the eighth inning. Billy Loes outdueled Ford to keep the Dodgers’ hopes alive and improve his record to 4-4.
