The 1953 New York Yankees defeated the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers, 3-2, to clinch the season 4 championship on the penultimate day of the season. The Yanks won their 21st game of the season and in the finale they’ll try to set the record for wins in a season.
The Yankees would have clinched even with a loss, as the 1957 Milwaukee Braves lost again to the 1954 Cleveland Indians. Early Wynn has had a rough season for both the Indians and the 1959 Chicago White Sox, but he was the winning pitcher for both teams today. The 1950 Philadelphia Phillies won to assure themselves of avoiding last place.
Philadelphia 5, New York Giants 3
The Giants’ Ray Katt hit his eighth homer of the season in the top of the fifth to tie the game at one. The Phillies (13-18) came right back and scored four times in the bottom of the fifth, including a three-run homer by Willie Jones, his seventh of the season. New York made things interesting, getting an RBI single from Hank Thompson in the eighth to make it 5-2. The first two batters in the top of the ninth reached base, bringing the tying run to the plate. But the Giants (17-14) could only get one run in on a Davey Williams sacrifice fly. The lowest-rated starting pitcher in the league, the Phillies’ Russ Meyer, outdueled the highest-rated starting pitcher, Johnny Antonelli.

The Braves (18-13) tied the game in the third on Del Crandall’s RBI single, and went ahead 2-1 in the fifth when Bill Bruton tripled and Warren Spahn had a sacrifice fly. Cleveland’s Larry Doby smacked a two-run homer in the top of the sixth, his sixth of the season, to put the Indians (12-19) ahead for good. Early Wynn and closer Don Mossi retired the final 10 Brave hitters.

Sherm Lollar hit a pair of two-run home runs to account for all of the White Sox (11-20) runs. His fifth and sixth homers came in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, to make the score 4-0. The Pirates (15-16) nearly rallied in the top of the ninth, scoring three times. Don Hoak tripled with two out to score one run and make it 4-3. But the potential tying run was stranded on third as reliever Turk Lown came in and got a game-ending strikeout. Early Wynn got his first win in his eighth and final start.

New York Yankees 3, Brooklyn 2
The Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Mickey Mantle doubled and Gene Woodling and Yogi Berra each had RBI singles. The Dodgers (17-14) cut the deficit in half on Jackie Robinson’s RBI single in the fourth. Mantle blasted a solo homer in the sixth inning, his fifth, to increase the lead back to two runs at 3-1. In the ninth, Duke Snider led off with a double, and he scored on Roy Campanella’s single. Reliever Allie Reynolds came in and got the final two outs to clinch the victory and the championship for the Yankees (21-10). Johnny Sain improved to 6-1 with another good start.
