12/16/22: Detroit 113, Sacramento 105

The Sacramento Kings’ three-game road winning streak came to a bad end as the Kings dropped a very winnable game at the Detroit Pistons, 113-105.

The Kings scored 153 points in a home win over the Pistons earlier in this replay, but could do little right in this one. Although Sacramento outshot Detroit 52.5% to 46.4%, the Pistons more than doubled the Kings’ three-pointers (13 to six), committed three fewer turnovers, grabbed five more offensive rebounds and had a big edge at the free throw line.

Domantas Sabonis had an excellent game with 26 points and 16 rebounds and all five starters scored in double-figures. But the Kings’ bench was outscored 50-19.

Bojan Bogdanovic led the Pistons with 25 points, Saddiq Bey scored 18 off the bench and Jalen Duren had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The loss drops the Kings to 16-12 both in the replay, same as they were in real life at this point.

Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox combined to score all of Sacramento’s first 18 points. The Kings only managed 22 in the first quarter. Bey hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Detroit a 23-16 lead, and the Pistons finished the period on an 11-4 run to go ahead 34-22.

Both offenses struggled in the second quarter, with the Kings outscoring the Pistons 18-17. The Kings cut the deficit to three at 36-33, but the Pistons quickly pushed the lead back up to double-digits, and it was 51-40 at halftime.

Detroit started the second period strong, taking a 20-point lead at 64-44. The Kings’ offense finally kicked into gear, scoring 40 points in the period. They whittled away at the lead, closing to within five points at 83-78. It was 87-80 heading into the final quarter.

The Kings managed to tie the game at 95 with under seven minutes to play thanks to a 10-0 run, of which five points were scored by Sabonis. They had multiple opportunities to take the lead, but couldn’t ever find a basket. In the final minutes, the Kings missed four free throws, while the Pistons went 4-for-4 in the final minute to ice the game.
