The results from the marquee series flipped from game one of the series, as the 1967 Boston Red Sox got a walk-off homer from Carl Yastrzemski to beat the 1961 New York Yankees, while the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals received a strong pitching performance from Ray Washburn to beat the 1969 Minnesota Twins. Those results put the top four teams back where they were at the start of the week: the Yankees in first at 13-9, the other three squads at 12-10. Only the 1962 Detroit Tigers have started this week’s series 2-0.
Detroit 7, Los Angeles 3
Both teams scored twice in the first inning, and then Sandy Koufax hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. It didn’t last, as the Tigers tied it on Rocky Colavito’s sacrifice fly in the fifth (his third RBI of the contest). In the sixth, Detroit (11-11) scored three more on a two-run single by Steve Boros and an RBI double by Norm Cash. Pinch-hitter Bubba Morton added a seventh run in the ninth inning with an RBI single. The Dodgers (9-13) lost their fifth in a row.

Boston 6, New York Yankees 5
The Yankees (13-9) blew a five-run lead. Solo homers by Roger Maris (his ninth) and Clete Boyer in the third and fourth, innings, respectively, made it 5-0. Boston tied it up quickly. The Red Sox (12-10) scored three in the bottom of the fourth with Mike Ryan getting an RBI single and Carl Yastrzemski hitting a two-run homer. They made it 5-5 in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Tony Conigliaro and a wild pitch that scored George Scott. It stayed tied until one out in the bottom of the ninth, when Yastrzemski hit his second homer of the game, this one for the walk-off victory.

St. Louis 2, Minnesota 1
The Cardinals’ Ray Washburn was one out away from a shutout. St. Louis (12-10) scored both of its runs in the sixth inning on four straight singles, including two that drove in runs by Julian Javier and Dal Maxvill. In the bottom of the ninth, the Twins (12-10) put two runners on with two outs. Leo Cardenas came through with an RBI single to score a run and put the potential tying run on third base. Joe Hoerner came out of the bullpen to get the final out. Washburn improved to 4-2 and Hoerner collected his fifth save.

San Francisco 6, New York Mets 3
The Mets (9-13) had a great first inning, getting an RBI single by Cleon Jones, followed by a two-run homer by Donn Clendenon to make it 3-0. But that was it for New York. The Giants (10-12) finally got on the board in the fifth on Jose Pagan’s RBI double. They tied it in the sixth on RBI singles by Jim Davenport and Chuck Hiller. In the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Willie McCovey broke the 3-3 tie with a solo homer. Later in the inning, Orlando Cepeda had a two-run blast (his eighth) to make it 6-3. Billy O’Dell picked up his third victory.
