7/31-8/2/1984: San Francisco at Cincinnati

My first contribution to the 1984 Community Replay Project was a three-game series between the San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds. The results followed real life, as the Reds won the first two and the Giants captured the finale.

July 31 – replay Reds 5-1 – actual Reds 3-0
August 1 – replay Reds 3-1 – actual Reds 6-3
August 2 – replay Giants 7-6 – actual Giants 5-2

July 31 (Reds 5-1): The Reds got all the runs they needed in the first three innings. Gary Redus led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Tom Foley hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Duane Walker did the same in the third inning. Cincinnati starter Jay Tibbs pitched a shutout in real life and came close here, but Jeffrey Leonard hit a homer in the eighth inning for the Giants’ only run.

August 1 (Reds 3-1): Like their previous meeting, the Reds scored the runs they needed early, and the Giants broke up the shutout late. In the top of the second, Duane Walker hit a one-out double, and he scored on Brad Gulden’s single. Winning pitcher Joe Price added an RBI double later in the inning. The Reds made it 3-0 in the top of the seventh when Gary Redus led off with a double and scored on Dave Concepcion’s single. Price pitched eight scoreless innings. The Giants finally scored on the Cincinnati bullpen in the top of the ninth on Johnnie LeMaster’s RBI single. With the tying run at the plate, Ted Power got the final two outs.

August 2 (Giants 7-6): The Reds couldn’t pull off a series sweep against the Giants after blowing a 6-1 lead. Wayne Krenchicki hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Gary Redus had a two-run shot in the fifth to give Cincinnati a five-run advantage. Frank Pastore threw six good innings but things fell apart in the seventh, as the Giants plated five runs, one by a bases-loaded walk, another by a balk, with the bit hit a two-run single by Scot Thompson. That tied the game at six. In the top of the seventh, pinch-hitter Steve Nicosia doubled and Dan Gladden singled him home for what turned out to be the game-winning run. Greg Minton retired all six Reds he faced in the eighth and ninth innings for the save.
