In the Trenches Football – 2023 NFL Season

After playing other people’s games for close to two years, I decided to take a shot at creating my own. There are more than enough baseball games out there, and I couldn’t come up with anything better from what I’ve seen of basketball and soccer games. I had an idea for football, though. And since I haven’t played many cards-and-dice football games, I decided to try to come up with something unique and where I wouldn’t have been too influenced by other creators.

I wouldn’t consider myself an expert in the sport of football, but I’ve long believed the offensive and defensive lines are the most important part of the game. A great offensive line can turn average quarterbacks and running backs into above-average players. Even the best quarterbacks have hard a time finding success when their offensive line is being overwhelmed by the defensive line.

So that’s where my game engine will start — in the trenches.

I created an initial set of play charts and team and player ratings for the 2023 NFL season. The game utilizes 10 and 20-sided dice. Everything begins with a battle on the line of scrimmage, and the winner of the matchup improves their team’s advantage on the drive charts. This is a drive-by-drive game, not a full-play game.

I paused during week 6, as I couldn’t decide at the time if I wanted to continue with this project or not. But after several months of playing other games, I decided to try again after doing some recalibrating and building the 2024 team sets.
