I wanted to find a way to play a baseball game with players that I worked with or watched in college. So I did some research and put together rosters for arguably the 10 most successful West Coast schools with players based on their MLB success.
Rather than try to track down (or create) APBA cards for dozens of players across a century of baseball, I decided to play this with a different game that I had recently purchased, Pocket Pennant Run. One advantage to this game is that it gives you ratings for every player in MLB history, and you don’t have to buy individual seasons.
I built 19-man rosters for 10 schools: eight position players, one DH, four starting pitchers, six relievers. Once I identified the players I wanted for each school, I tried to pick their best season, then went in and pulled out their PPR ratings.
To give a little bit of balance to the teams, I limited them to four A hitters, two A starters and three A relievers. So in a few cases, I had to go find a lesser season to turn an A player into a B player.
There were a couple of instances where a school didn’t appear to have an alum that had ever played at a certain position in MLB, so I had to make a few allowances for that.
I played an 18-game season — each school will play the other twice — for 90 total games rolled with the dice. This project began in July 2023 and concluded in September 2023.
The 10 schools: Arizona, Arizona State, California, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Stanford, UCLA, USC.
USC won the league title over UCLA and Arizona State by two games, though it came down to the final gameday.
