GAME #8 (winners’ bracket first round):
The favored Phillies got out to a 1-0 early, but hit into double plays in the second and third innings and they weren’t able to extend the lead. San Diego then turned in a four-run fourth inning, which began with four consecutive doubles. Terry Kennedy hit his second RBI double in the fifth inning to make it 5-1, and Ruppert Jones homered in the eighth to advance the lead to 6-1. Philadelphia put across single runs in the eighth and ninth but that was it. The Padres’ Juan Eichelberger was solid in the win, striking out four in 7 2/3 innings. Steve Carlton was hit hard in his seven innings, with nine hits and five earned runs.
