1/7/2016 Pacific at Pepperdine

The Waves beat Pacific at home in real life, and in all three of the simulations. But the sims were far, far away from matching reality. Two of the sims were lower scoring with bigger victory margins for the Waves, while the other saw both teams score 100 points in a two-point thriller.

Real: [W] Pepperdine 81, Pacific 76 — 2-2
CB2K: [W] Pepperdine 65, Pacific 48 — 2-2
APC: [W] Pepperdine 102, Pacific 100 — 3-1
CCB: [W] Pepperdine 69, Pacific 56 — 3-1

I think Pacific’s team might be broken in the Action! PC game. The Tigers made 22 of 32 three-pointers! Alec Kobre was a fine player, but not the type of guy who would make 13 of 14 three-pointers and score 46 points, as he did in this computer simulation. This wasn’t a one-game anomaly either. I’m running all of the WCC games on this platform, not just the Waves, and Kobre is averaging 35.0 points per game through five games. Still, somehow the Waves scored 102 points to get the win. It was tied 100-100 with 30 seconds left and Jett Raines made two of four free throws down the stretch, and the Waves finally forced a couple of misses.

The other two games were a little more reasonable. The CB2K cards-and-dice game was close for a while, but the Waves shut down the Tigers in the second half, particularly over the final 10 minutes, to win by 17. The free throw margin again greatly favored the Waves, although they only went 18-for-35. The Waves shot a similar number in the real game, but were much better, going 31-for-38.

The Courtside College Basketball game was a one-point game at halftime, but Pepperdine wasn’t really threatened much in the second half en route to a 13-point win.

Some of the individual performances were close to the real thing. Stacy Davis had 17 points and 12 rebounds in real life. He had 16 and 11, and 18 and 10, in two of the games. Jett Raines scored 20 in the actual game, and he had 22 and 23 in two of the simulations.
