Only four wrestlers remain in the competition. The winners’ bracket final will feature two men who are deservedly there, #2 Andre the Giant and #4 Randy Savage. The two still alive in the losers’ bracket are much more unexpected, with #20 Honky Tonk Man and #21 Brutus Beefcake both posting back-to-back upsets to remain alive.
Winners’ Bracket Semifinals:
(4) Randy Savage vs. (9) Ricky Steamboat: Steamboat started the match a house on fire, nearly erasing Savage’s advantage. Action spilled to the outside of the right, and both men were bloodied as each sent the other into the ring post. Back in the ring, Savage began to assert control. He went to the top rope three times, intent on finishing off Steamboat. The Dragon kicked out after the first two, but the third and final Flying Elbow Drop ended it. Savage def. Steamboat by pinfall at 21:00.
(2) Andre the Giant vs. (11) Tito Santana: It looked like this one might be a squash early on, as Andre got in a number of big blows. But, Santana kept dancing out of the way and avoiding Andre’s finishers. Santana got in a few flying forearms that put Andre to the mat, but not nearly enough to put him down for three. The match went on and on, with Santana getting in more offense, but not enough to hurt Andre. Finally, after nearly an hour, Andre hit the Sit Down Splash to finish Santana off. Andre the Giant def. Santana by pinfall at 50:00.
Losers’ Bracket Fifth Round:
(17) Kamala vs. (21) Brutus Beefcake: Beefcake posted a relatively easy, quick victory to keep his Cinderella run going. His second time hitting Kamala with a Running Knee put the big man down for good. Beefcake def. Kamala by pinfall at 8:00.
(10) Jake Roberts vs. (20) Honky Tonk Man: Honky Tonk Man added another notable upset to the list, as he took it to Roberts from the beginning, getting in two or three strikes for every one of Roberts. He landed the Shake, Rattle & Roll three times, the last one ending it. Honky Tonk Man def. Roberts by pinfall at 12:00.
Losers’ Bracket Sixth Round:
(11) Tito Santana vs. (21) Brutus Beefcake: Shockingly, Brutus Beefcake is still in this tournament. He and Santana went back and forth on the attack. Santana had the advantage, but Beefcake was able to catapult him into the ring post, then roll him up to end it. Beefcake def. Santana by pinfall at 11:00.
(9) Ricky Steamboat vs (20) Honky Tonk Man: And yet another upset! Steamboat looked to have this one well in hand, keeping a big advantage and wearing down Honky Tonk Man. Steamboat went for a pin, but HTM was able to reverse the roll-up, and kept Steamboat’s back on the mat for the three count. Honky Tonk Man def. Steamboat by pinfall at 16:00.
