MLB College Gameday #17

For the second straight gameday, USC failed to clinch the championship and lost to a last-place team. UCLA kept pace and is now one game back with one to play. California won in 13 innings to move into sole possession of fourth place. Three teams are tied for the cellar heading into the final contest.

Arizona 5, USC 3: Ron Hassey was a one-man wrecking crew for the Wildcats, as he drove in all five runs. He had a two-run double in the third, a two-run homer in the fifth and an RBI single in the ninth. The Trojans scored one each in fourth, fifth and sixth, the last on a solo homer by Geoff Jenkins, but failed to clinch again.

UCLA 7, Long Beach State 2: Trailing 2-1, the Bruins broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning that featured an RBI double by Brandon Crawford and RBI singles by Jackie Robinson, Troy Glaus and Eric Byrnes. Chase Utley added a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

California 7, Cal State Fullerton 6 (13 innings): The Titans led 4-1 after three, trailed 6-4 after eight, and tied it in the bottom of the ninth on two-out RBI singles by Phil Nevin and Aaron Rowand. After three scoreless extra innings, the Bears finally pushed a run across in the top of the 13th. Mark Canha singled with two out and scored on Geoff Blum’s double. Fullerton went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 13th.

Arizona State 10, Oregon State 2: Craig Swan nearly pitched his second shutout in five starts. A two-out error in the bottom of the ninth prolonged the game, and Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run home run. But it was already 10-0 before that, as Reggie Jackson and Paul LoDuca homered and Dustin Pedroia collected four hits.
