GTOP S2W1: 1920 Indians vs. 1919 Reds

The 1919 Cincinnati Reds got their season off to a good start with a one-run victory in game number one, but the 1920 Cleveland Indians came back with three straight victories to win the series. Elmer Smith (8-for-17, .471) and Tris Speaker (8-for-18, .444) had big weeks, with the latter providing an extra-innings walk-off hit in the finale. The Reds were led by Heinie Groh’s .438 (7-for-16) average.

Game #1: Cincinnati 4, Cleveland 3

The Reds built a 4-0 lead and Dutch Reuther was cruising along, allowing only one hit through five innings while providing an RBI triple to help his cause. The Indians’ offense finally woke up in the sixth, as they strung together three straight hits, including a two-RBI double from Tris Speaker, and cut the deficit to 4-3. But Ruether only allowed one hit the rest of the way, and although Cleveland got the potential tying run to third base with two outs in the ninth inning, Ruether struck out the final batter to preserve the win.

Game #3: Cleveland 8, Cincinnati 4

Cleveland scored the first four runs, and it was 4-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh. The Indians then scored four times, as Larry Gardner and Doc Johnston both had two-RBI doubles. It turns out they needed those runs, as the Reds scored three times in the top of the eighth, two on a single by Sherry Magee, ubt it wasn’t enough for a comeback.
