GTOP S2W4: Recap

The 1927 New York Yankees and the 1929 Chicago Cubs swept their four-game series in week 4 and became the first teams to hit double-digits in wins. After going 4-0 against the 1922 New York Giants (who began the week with the best winning percentage) the Yankees now have a two-game lead in the standings at their halfway point.

You’d think that Babe Ruth, or maybe Lou Gehrig, would be the player making the biggest impact on the Yankees. But far and away, the best hitter in the league has been Bob Meusel. He began the week leading the league in batting average and he raised it to .431 while hitting home runs in all four of the games. He’s among the league leaders in practically everything. He only hit eight home runs in 1927 but he’s got six in 16 games here. Also, the Yankees’ Urban Shocker became the first pitcher to go 4-0 after four starts.

Week five will be highlighted by the 1920 Cleveland Indians-1925 Washington Senators series, which features two of the top four teams in the league. The Yankees will have a chance to add to their lead as they face the 1919 Cincinnati Reds, who are in eighth place.
