GTOP S2W8: 1919 Reds vs. 1922 Giants

The 1919 Cincinnati Reds were shut out twice and managed to score only one earned run in four games, and the 1922 New York Giants gained a four-game sweep. The Giants (14-14) got back to .500 while the Reds (6-22) will head into the final week of the season in the cellar.

Art Nehf and Phil Douglas pitched shutouts in games one and two for the Giants, who were led by Frank Snyder’s .364 average (4-for-11) at the plate. The Reds hit just .183 as a team, but Ed Roush (.353, 6-for-17) had a good series.

Game #1: New York 1, Cincinnati 0

Despite a team-best ERA, New York’s Art Nehf was winless in his first six starts. He was fantastic in this one, throwing a six-hit, 10-strikeout shutout. He barely outdueled Cincinnati’s Dutch Ruether, who gave up just four hits. But two of them came in the sixth inning, as Casey Stengel led off with a triple and scored on Irish Meusel’s single for the game’s only run. The Reds loaded the bases in the sixth inning and had runners on second and third in the eighth, but Nehf got out of the jams.

Phil Douglas was even better than Nehf, as he came through with a three-hit shutout with only one walk. Only two Reds made it to second base, and no one went any further. The Giants took the lead on a Frankie Frisch sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. They scored three more in the fifth, which included RBI singles from Frisch and Irish Meusel.

Game #3: New York 6, Cincinnati 5

After going 23 innings without a run, the Reds scored three unearned runs in the sixth with the help of RBI singles by Morrie Rath and Sherry Magee. It didn’t last, as New York scored three runs on four hits in the seventh and three run on four hits in the eighth. Six different players drove in the runs. Game #4: New York 3, Cincinnati 1

The Giants nearly got another shutout courtesy of Jesse Barnes. The Giants jumped out to a 3-0 lead after RBI singles from Frank Snyder in the second and fourth innings and an RBI single from Irish Meusel in the fifth. In the sixth, the Reds put runners on second and third with no out, but could only get one run after a Jake Daubert RBI groundout.
