The 1937 New York Yankees became the first team in Season 3 to win a series, as they took three of four games from the 1935 Chicago Cubs.
Lefty Gomez tossed a two-hit shutout to get the season started, while Joe DiMaggio hit .412 (7-for-17) to lead the Yankees at the plate. Frank Demaree batted .500 (8-for-16) for the Cubs.
Game #1: New York 3, Chicago 0
Lefty Gomez was remarkable, as the Yankee starter tossed a two-hit shutout and pitched to 28 hitters, just one over the minimum. In the top of the second, he faced a situation with runners on first and second with no one out, but Phil Cavaretta hit into a triple play. After Stan Hack led off the third with a single, Gomez retired the final 21 hitters. The Yankees got an RBI double from Jake Powell in the fourth, an RBI single from Myril Hoag in the sixth and a solo homer from Bill Dickey in the eighth.
