After a week-one bye, the 1934 Detroit Tigers got their season underway. It wasn’t pretty, as the 1935 Chicago Cubs collected the first four-game sweep by any team this season. The Cubs (5-3) outscored the Tigers (0-4) 25-9.
The Cubs got big weeks from Frank Demaree (.471, 8-for-17), Chuck Klein (.444, 8-for-14, 7 RBI) and Billy Herman (.444, 8-for-18, 6 RBI). The Cubs were led by Goose Goslin’s .385 average (5-for-13).
Game #1: Chicago 9, Detroit 2
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead on Billy Rogell’s RBI single in the bottom of the third, but it didn’t last. The Cubs put up four two-run innings the rest of the way. Phil Cavaretta had an RBI triple and Stan Hack had an RBI single to put Chicago in front 3-2 in the fourth. Gabby Hartnett hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 5-2. Frank Demaree drove in a run with a single and scored on a balk to make it 7-2 in the seventh. Chuck Klein and Cavaretta had RBI singles in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Game #2: Chicago 3, Detroit 0 (10 inn.)
The Cubs’ Lon Warnecke and the Tigers’ Schoolboy Rowe had a remarkable pitchers’ duel, as the game went to extra innings tied 0-0. The Tigers only put one runner into scoring position all game long, and that was in the second inning. Warnecke scattered six hits and only walked one in a 10-inning shutout. Rowe had to pitch out of trouble multiple times, and did so until the top of the 10th. The Cubs’ Billy Herman led off with a double, Chuck Klein followed with an RBI triple and Gabby Hartnett blasted his second two-run homer in two games.

Game #3: Chicago 8, Detroit 6
Chuck Klein hit a pair of two-run homers, which came in the first and sixth innings. They helped the Cubs take leads of 4-0 after two innings and 7-2 after six innings. The Tigers made things interesting by scoring four times in the seventh, which included a two-run double from Charlie Gehringer. But the Cubs got an insurance run in the eighth on Billy Herman’s RBI single and their relievers got the job done late.

Game #4: Chicago 5, Detroit 1
The Tigers scored first on Marv Owen’s RBI double in the top of the second. But that would be it despite collecting 11 hits off of Chicago starter Tex Carleton, who struck out 10 in eight innings of work. The Cubs went up 2-1 in the third on Billy Herman’s RBI single and Chuck Klein’s RBI triple. Stan Hack had an RBI triple of his own in the fourth inning. Herman drove in two more in the seventh with a single for the final runs of the contest.
