MLB College S2 Gameday #18

There was no drama on the final gameday of the season, as USC had already secured its second straight title. After clinching, the Trojans lost their next two for their first losing streak of the season. Oregon State lost, but backed into sole possession of second place when Long Beach State also lost.

Geoff Jenkins put the Trojans ahead with an RBI double in the second inning. It was all solo homers after that. David Newhan of the Waves tied it in the third inning. Fred Lynn put USC back ahead 2-1 in the fourth. Andy Stankiewicz and Ryan Christenson both hit solo shots in the fifth inning for Pepperdine and that would be it for the scoring as the Waves pulled off the upset.

California 6, Cal State Fullerton 1

Marcus Semien’s two-run triple got the Golden Bears off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Taylor Douthit made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the fifth. The Titans got their only run in the top of the sixth on Justin Turner’s RBI single. Cal put the game away with three in the bottom half of the frame, as Bob Melvin and Jackie Jensen had RBI singles.

Arizona 7, Stanford 4

Carlos Quentin hit a three-run home in the top of the first for the Cardinal. The Wildcats posted single runs in each of the first three innings, including solo homers from Terry Francona and Jack Howell, to tie it. Arizona hit two more homers in a four-run seventh inning to break the game open, with Nick Hundley leading off the inning with a solo homer and Francona later hitting his second of the game, this time a three-run blast.

UCLA 8, Oregon State 1

Eric Karros and Troy Glaus hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, and Dave Roberts added a solo blast in the second, as the Bruins quickly led 4-0. OSU’s only run came on Steven Kwan’s RBI single in the fourth. UCLA added four more in the seventh, with Glaus and Todd Zeile both collecting two-run singles. Tim Leary picked up his fourth win of the season.

The season didn’t want to end, as this one went 13 innings. ASU scored first in the third inning when Paul LoDuca led off with a double and scored on Rick Monday’s RBI single. Evan Longoria led off the seventh inning with a solo homer for the Beach to tie the contest. It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the 13th. Willie Bloomquist led off with a walk and went to third on Dustin Pedroia’s single. After the first out, Barry Bonds had a walk-off sacrifice fly to score Bloomquist.
