Three teams have won both contests so far in their week #4 series. The 1954 New York Giants beat the 1953 New York Yankees again to keep a share of first place, while the 1957 Milwaukee Braves hit five home runs, two by Wes Covington, in a rout of the 1959 Chicago White Sox, and the 1954 Cleveland Indians are no longer in last place after defeating the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies for the second time. Also, Vinegar Bend Mizell of the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates tossed a shutout to keep the Pirates in a first-place tie.
Cleveland 7, Philadelphia 1
The Indians (5-9) got out of last place for the first time this season after knocking off the Phillies (4-10) for the second straight game. They scored in five consecutive innings starting with Al Rosen’s two-run homer in the fourth inning, his fourth of the season. Philadelphia errors helped plate the next two runs. In the seventh, Bobby Avila hit a two-run homer, and in the eighth, Al Smith had an RBI single. Bob Lemon was excellent, pitching a complete game and giving up one run, seven hits and zero walks.
