The 1961 New York Yankees and the 1962 San Francisco Giants are the last two unbeatens after the second day of the season. The Yankees had to go to extra innings to beat the 1969 Minnesota Twins in a high-scoring contest. The other three games were decided by scores of 4-3, 4-2 and 4-2.

Los Angeles 4, New York Mets 3

The Dodgers (1-1) had a 4-0 lead before the Mets (0-2) got their first hit off of Sandy Koufax in the bottom of the sixth. Willie Davis hit a solo homer in the first, Jim Gilliam had an RBI single in the third and Frank Howard slammed a two-run homer in the sixth. The Mets’ Al Weis ended the no-hit bid with a single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Jerry Grote knocked a three-run home run to get the Mets within a run. But Koufax and Ron Perranoski combined to retire the final eight New York batters after that.

New York Yankees 9, Minnesota 6 (12 inn.)

The Yankees (2-0) built a 5-0 lead after five innings, which included a two-run home run from Bill Skowron. The Twins got their first run in the bottom of the sixth on Rich Reese’s RBI double. In the bottom of the ninth, Minnesota roughed up New York’s bullpen, tying the game thanks to a three-run pinch-hit home run by George Mitterwald and an RBI double from Rod Carew. In the top of the 12th, the Yankees had three straight singles, the last one scoring the go-ahead run by Elston Howard, and pinch-hitter Bob Cerv then provided a three-run home run to make it 9-5. Minnesota (1-1) scored once in the bottom of the 12th on Harmon Killebrew’s RBI single, then loaded the bases with one out, but hit into a game-ending double play. Yogi Berra and Rod Carew had four-hit games.

The Tigers scored first on a solo homer by Jake Wood in the fourth inning. The Giants (2-0) finally strung some hits together in the bottom of the sixth, which included a two-run triple from Orlando Cepeda and an RBI single by Felipe Alou. The Giants got one more in the seventh when Jose Pagan led off with a double and later scored on Harvey Kuenn’s sacrifice fly. Detroit (0-2) made it 4-2 in the eighth on Al Kaline’s RBI double. They put runners on the corners with no one out in the ninth but Juan Marichal got the next three outs to finish off his complete-game win.
