GTOP S5W1: Gameday #3

The three-peat effort rolls on, as the 1961 New York Yankees are the final unbeaten team three games into the new season. They’ve got eight home runs already after hitting four against the 1961 Detroit Tigers, two by Yogi Berra. The 1962 San Francisco Giants suffered their first loss and they’re now one of four teams at 2-1.

Boston 3, New York Mets 1

The Red Sox (2-1) got all of their scoring out of the way early, as George Scott had an RBI double in the first inning, and Rico Petrocelli had an RBI double followed by an RBI triple by Mike Ryan in the third inning, making it 3-0. The Mets (0-3) got their only run in the third inning on Cleon Jones’ RBI single. That was it as Lee Stange pitched seven good innings and John Wyatt earned a two-inning save.

Los Angeles 4, St. Louis 1

Three home runs provided the offense for the Dodgers (2-1). Willie Davis hit a two-run homer in the first inning, while Tommy Davis and Frank Howard had solo shots in the fourth and eighth, respectively. The Cardinals (1-2) broke up Don Drysdale’s shutout bid in the seventh inning despite not getting a hit. Two walks and an error loaded the bases and a fielder’s choice brought home their only run. Drysdale gave up just three hits in eight innings.
