The week 1 jamboree ended with the 1961 New York Yankees staying perfect after their fourth straight win. The 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers and the 1969 Minnesota Twins both were victorious for the third time. In the battle of the last two winless teams, the 1961 Detroit Tigers beat the 1969 New York Mets.
New York Yankees 3, Boston 2
The first two times the Yankees took a one-run lead, the Red Sox tied it up. But not the third time, as New York (4-0) stayed unbeaten. Two errors helped the Yankees score their first run in the second inning. Elston Howard and Mickey Mantle hit solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, for the other two. The Red Sox (2-2) got an RBI double from Reggie Smith in the fourth and an RBI single by George Scott in the sixth.
