GTOP S5W2: Gameday #6

The 1961 Yankees are unbeaten no more, as the 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers got a great performance from Johnny Podres to hand the Yanks their first loss. The 1969 Minnesota Twins won a slugfest against the 1961 Detroit Tigers to pull into a first-place tie with the Yankees at 5-1.

The 1962 San Francisco Giants won a high-scoring contest against the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals, which saw Orlando Cepeda hit a home run for both teams. Finally, the 1967 Boston Red Sox won again to keep the 1969 New York Mets winless.

San Francisco 13, St. Louis 6

The Giants (3-3) battered the Cardinals’ pitchers early on, scoring all 13 runs in the first four innings. They hit four home runs: a two-run shot by Orlando Cepeda in the first, a two-run homer by Willie Mays in the second, and back-to-back homers by Jim Davenport and Tom Haller in the fourth. Cepeda had quite a day for both teams, going a combined 7-for-10 and hitting a home run for both sides, with a solo homer for the Cardinals (2-4) in the eighth.

Minnesota 7, Detroit 6

Both teams hit three home runs in this slugfest. The Twins (5-1) went up 2-0 in the fourth on a Harmon Killebrew home run, but the Tigers (1-5) came right back with a three-run homer by Dick Brown in the bottom half of the frame. The only run not scored via home run came in the top of the sixth on Rich Reese’s RBI double, tying the game at three. Detroit then got a solo homer from Norm Cash in the bottom of the sixth to go back up 4-3. In the top of the seventh, Minnesota hit two two-run homers, first by pinch-hitter Graig Nettles and later by Tony Oliva, making it 7-4. Cash hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, a two-run shot, cutting the deficit to one. But Minnesota’s relievers retired the final six Tiger batters.
